# StrongFolder use cases

> People use StrongFolder when files are too big for email or chat and a cloud upload feels like a detour: families sharing event videos, creators delivering footage and RAW photos, gamers swapping mod packs, architects sending CAD projects, teachers handing out materials and developers moving builds. Files go directly between browsers, and folders keep their structure.

StrongFolder does one thing: it sends files and folders **directly** from your browser to
someone else's. Files are never uploaded to or stored on a StrongFolder server. No size limit set by StrongFolder. The practical limits are free disk space on the recipient's device, connection speed, and how long both devices stay online. Below is how different people use
that — and, for each, when another tool fits better.

**Key facts**

- Files travel over WebRTC data channels (peer-to-peer) between the sender's and the recipient's browsers; nothing is uploaded first.
- Folders are sent as folders: subfolders and file names are kept, nothing is zipped.
- One link can be opened by several recipients; each downloads directly from the sender. Every link also has a QR code, handy for sending from a computer to a phone.
- Free, no account needed to send or receive.
- The trade-off: the sender's tab must stay open until the download ends.

## Families & events

A wedding video, a birthday's worth of phone clips, a scanned family archive — these files
are too big for chat apps, and chat apps shrink them anyway. With one StrongFolder link,
every relative gets the original files in full quality.

At an event, show the **QR code** on a laptop screen and let people scan it. Phones download
files one by one or as a ZIP; to save a whole folder with its structure, open the link in
Chrome, Edge or Opera on a computer.

If grandparents will download "sometime next week", a shared cloud album is easier — a
StrongFolder link works only while you keep sharing.

## Creators

**Video creators and editors** send camera footage, proxies and whole consolidated project
folders to editors and clients without recompression or an upload wait. See [How to share
large video files](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/share-large-video-files/) and [How to send large video
files](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/send-large-video-files/).

**Photographers** hand RAW + JPEG folders — with XMP sidecars in place — to retouchers,
second shooters and agencies. Client galleries remain the better tool for proofing and print
sales: see [How to send RAW photos](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/send-raw-photos/).

## Gamers

<img src="/images/use-cases/gamers.webp" alt="Gamers sharing mod packs" width="180" height="180" loading="lazy">

Mod packs, save files, worlds and playtest builds are all **folders** that only work with
their structure intact. Drop one link into your group chat and everyone gets the same setup.
Share only what you have the right to share — your own saves, worlds and builds, and mods
whose authors allow it. See [How to share game files](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/share-game-files/).

## Business

<img src="/images/use-cases/business.webp" alt="Architects and agencies sending project files" width="180" height="180" loading="lazy">

**Architects and engineers** send packaged CAD and BIM projects — AutoCAD xrefs, Revit links,
SolidWorks assemblies — with relative paths intact: [How to send CAD files](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/send-cad-files/).

**Agencies and studios** deliver design files, video edits and campaign assets to clients
without zipping and without a copy left on a third-party server. **Event teams** pass photo
and video material to organizers the same evening. For large PDFs and document sets, see
[How to send large documents](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/send-large-documents/); for confidentiality, [secure
file sharing](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/secure-file-sharing/).

For daily collaboration on the same files, a cloud drive or a project platform is the better
fit — compare in [StrongFolder vs Google Drive](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/compare/strongfolder-vs-google-drive/).

## Education

Teachers share recorded lectures, datasets and software for a class: put the folder on the
screen as a QR code and students download it during the lesson. Students send large projects
— films, 3D scenes, design portfolios — to a teacher without hitting email limits (see
[email attachment size limits](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/email-attachment-size-limits/)).

Course material that must stay available all semester belongs in your learning platform or a
cloud folder.

## Developers

Developers move builds, logs, datasets, VM images and whole working folders between machines
and colleagues — including between their own computers, for example [from Mac to
Windows](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/mac-to-windows-file-transfer/). Exclude folders you can regenerate (such as
dependency caches) to save time. Curious about the mechanics? Read [how WebRTC file transfer
works](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/how-webrtc-file-transfer-works/) and [advanced file
transfer](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/advanced-file-transfer/).

## Which use case is not a good fit?

StrongFolder is the wrong tool when the sender can't stay online, when files must stay
available for weeks, or when people need to preview and comment online. In those cases use
a cloud link — [P2P vs cloud file transfer](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/guides/p2p-vs-cloud-file-transfer/) explains
the trade-off, and [WeTransfer alternatives](https://help.strongfolder.com/en/compare/wetransfer-alternatives/) compares
the options.

## FAQ

### What is StrongFolder best for?

Sending large files and whole folders to someone right now, without uploading them first: footage, photo shoots, project folders, mod packs, builds. No size limit set by StrongFolder. The practical limits are free disk space on the recipient's device, connection speed, and how long both devices stay online.

### When is a cloud drive a better choice?

When you can't stay online until the recipient finishes, when files must stay available for weeks, or when people need to browse and preview them online. The sender's browser tab must stay open and online until the recipient finishes downloading — files come from the sender's device, not from a server.

### Can I share with several people at once?

Yes. One link can be opened by several recipients; each downloads directly from the sender. Simultaneous downloads share your upload bandwidth.

### Do recipients need an account or an app?

No. No account needed to send or receive. Signing in with Google is optional and keeps a list of your transfers. The recipient only needs a browser; to save a whole folder with its structure, Chrome, Edge or Opera on a computer.

### Is it free?

Yes. StrongFolder is free to send and receive, in the web app and in the Chrome extension.
